From single stave to full score ...

MusicMaster contains all the features you are likely to need to create a comprehensive, professional looking score.

A brief outline of the features available is given below, but if you feel something is not clear, or an expected feature is missing, please contact us. We have probably just left it off the list, but if not, we are continually looking to improve the software so requested features can often be incorporated.

Notes

Note lengths from breve down to hemi-demi-semi-quavers can be set with a single keystroke, and a full stop will add a dot (up to triple dotting allowed). Once set, note lengths are not fixed, so they can be changed at any time - invaluable if you are experimenting with an arrangement.

The pitch is also set by a single key stroke and the octave can be set and reset, if necessary, using arrow keys. The range available extends well beyond standard musical instruments at top and bottom.

Of course naturals, sharps, double sharps, flats double flats and courtesy accidentals are available and equally easy to set if they are not in the key signature.

's' will add a staccato to a note, and a second 's' will turn it into a double staccato. A third 's' will set it back to normal. A variety of accents are also available.

For string players, false harmonics can be set (just press 'h'), and a cadenza style of note (small notes) is just as easy. You can reverse the position of the note head (for close harmonies) if you wish, although this is normally done automatically.

Grace notes (both acciaccatura and appogiatura) are of course included, and don't need carefully formatting or adjusting - it all happens naturally.

Four independent parts per stave are available and each part can have up to four notes in a chord, so you can have 16 notes on a stave, if you can find somewhere to put them; and up to 32 staves are included. Whether notes tails go up or down is usually determined by the system, but you can override this and set 'up' or 'down' for a whole part and for individual notes

Beams

Beams are created automatically corresponding to beat as set in the key signature. If this is not quite what you want a single key stroke will join or break a beam where you specify. You can even create beams across bar lines and, for piano and harp music, across staves.

Graphics

As well as six types of clef MusicMaster includes a range of musical signs and symbols, repeat marks with or without first and second time bar indicators and both square and curly brackets to join staves together.

For slurs, ties and hairpins all you need do is specify where they start and finish. MusicMaster will do the rest, spreading them over lines as necessary.

Text

Text can be attached to notes, to the page and at the begining of each stave. There are twelve different text types each with their own default font (which can of course be overridden for individual piece of text) and which can be reset across an entire score, so achieving a consistent output is not a problem.

Chord letters (e.g. Em, G7 etc) are very quick to enter, as are lyrics. Just pick your note, and open the dialogue. When you press ENTER MusicMaster will automatically move to the next position and re-open the dialogue, so essentially all you have to do is type.

Formatting

Like a word processor, when you reach the end of a line, the software will take you to the next line, creating staves as necessary. You can of course squash the bars up a bit, or set the end of the line where you want if the defaults are not quite what you want. For large scale formatting a variety if templates are included (string quartet, brass band, orchestra, choir etc), and it is also easy to create your own at any time. These templates contain the page size, margins, and stave name.

Bars

MusicMaster includes several bar line types (single, double, start and end repeat and section and thick bar line),

Editing

Editing facilities include cut or copy and paste, and click and drag and you can edit virtually anything at any time. Staves, bars, and the part of a bar on a single stave can be inserted or deleted whenever you want, note pitches can be altered, and so can the note lengths. You can change the clef, key signature and even the time signature whenever you want. Changing the time signature will not alter the notes and bars already entered so you might get some odd length bars which will need managing.

Other features

You can play back the score or individual parts starting and stopping wherever you specify. At present, only a piano sound is available, but that should be enough to ensure you have typed what you meant to.

You can transpose whole scores, or individual staves and music sections just by changing the key signature. Lettered chords can be transposed also be transposed at the same time, if you wish. Unlike some other packages any modulations on the piece will be preserved if you transpose the whole score (unless you specifically say not to).
